Bowling with the stars at Potters Resort

More than 300 bowlers descended on Potters Resort in Hopton-on-Sea, Norfolk, to enjoy a five-star week for the latest Bowls International ‘Bowl with the Stars’ event.

The biannual Bowls International sponsored week, which takes place every April and November, sees visitors from all corners of the UK rock up and bowl at the venue of the World Indoor Bowls Championships – while also sampling the exceptional five-star facilities at the UK’s first all-inclusive resort (writes Bowls International’s associate editor Matt Wordingham).

Potters’ own bowls ambassador and current world number six Greg Harlow, and three-time World Indoor Singles champion Andy Thomson MBE were on hand all week, in addition to an exclusive Q&A session hosted by Potters’ own entertainers Rachel Baade and Buzby Allen.

Greg and Andy were on hand to offer tips and advice on all aspects of the sport in four two-hour special coaching seminars, focusing on bowlers’ deliveries and skills exercises.

The four-night break includes more food and drink than you can imagine, as well as live entertainment and activities throughout the day.

Wednesday evening saw one of the highlights of the week as six group leaders, or their nominated deputy, took part in the pro-am celebrity challenge match – each rink skipped by either Greg or Andy.

This year saw a narrow victory for Greg’s team, assisted by Cambridge Park’s Dawn Slaughter, Kempston Park’s Peter Denton and Ferryhill’s Joshua Jolly, in front of a packed crowd in the International Arena.

The Q&A session saw more than 100 guests head over to the Garden Bar and featured questions on Greg and Andy’s careers in the game and even Francis Drake’s involvement in the sport, who Greg seemed to think played in a rink alongside Andy!

Special congratulations must go to Disability Bowls England’s Khalila Hussain, John Rogers, Tim Swann and Arthur Redfearn, who won the midweek bowls competition, defeating Mayfield Park’s Sharon Smith, Christopher Cummins, Christine Cummins and Alan Cummins in the final.

To top off a great week for the Disability Bowls England bowlers, they also won the top team trophy following some great bowling by all their representatives.

The next Bowls International ‘Bowl with the Stars’ event takes place from Monday, April 17, 2023. To join us, head over to www.pottersresorts.com
