Down to the Whyers

Spalding’s Matt Whyers has qualified for the Grand Final of the Premier Threes events, to be held at Erewash Indoor Bowls Club on Wednesday, 18 December.

Whyers had to defeat local hero Mike Smith in the final, and after dropping a three on the opening end in bizarre circumstances, things looked bleak for the young player.

However, Whyers dug deep and managed to tie the first set 3-3.

The second set also saw Smith take the initiative, securing an excellent two on the opening end, before a score of two for Whyers and a single saw him clinch the second, 3-2, with Smith’s bowl finishing half an inch further away that Whyers’.

The final set saw Whyers claim a double on the opener, and although Smith responded with a single, the Spalding match saw off his opponent with a score of one to win the set 3-1.

Whyers got to the final after beating club-mate Calvin Leuty in the semi-finals, securing a 2-1, 3-0 sets win, and he despatched Grantham and District’s Matt Orrey in the first round, winning in straight sets, 3-2,4-1.
