Bowlathon raises over £2,000 for charity

Players from across England recently travelled to Westlecot BC in Swindon to take on the mammoth challenge of a 24-hour bowlathon raising funds for Caudwell Children.

Before the event kicked off, thanks to huge sponsorship efforts from the players, a fantastic £1,200 had already been raised. The original target was £1,500 and with this in mind, event organiser Mikey Titcombe upped the final target to £2,000, with participants encouraging friends and family to donate while they were in the process of completing the challenge.

The format for the day was a 12 vs 12 competition, team red vs team purple, with all players taking part in a range of different formats across the 24 hours. There were 12 two-hour sessions, with teams securing points for each individual rink win, and also bonus points for winning the overall scoreboard in each session.

Spirits were high as the event got underway, and it was clear to see that although this was a charity event, players were still fiercely competitive, wanting to secure the victories for their respective teams. It was team purple that started the stronger of the two teams, opening up a strong lead after the first third of the competition, dominating the two singles sessions to help them towards the 80-point winning target.

Fatigue certainly began to set in with around eight hours to go, and the rivalry between the two sides started to transform into encouragement for one another, as it was clear that some were beginning to struggle as the finish line edged closer and closer.

This was the first event of its kind, and with it being a massive success, planning is already underway for next year’s event. It is hoped it will be even bigger and better than its predecessor!
