British Isles Championships Update

Jersey girls take two titles…

Jersey was victorious in the triples and pairs disciplines at the British Isles Women’s Bowls Council’s British Isles Championships.

Tracey O’ Connor, Katie Nixon and Lindsey Greechan won by the slenderest, single shot margin to overcome Scotland’s representatives in M. Beveridge, Marie Graham and Mary Galbraith, 20-19.

It was the same margin that saw the Jersey trio past the prelims after scoring a single on the final end against England’s Debbie Baker, Judy Banes and Amy Banes, 18-17, whilst they kept on to their semi-final lead against Wales’ Melanie Thomas, Carolyn James and Anwen Butten, with Jersey getting through 13-11.

Jersey’s fours final win was more emphatic! Doreen Moon, Chris Grimes, Alison Gamacho and Gean O’Neill stormed to victory over Scotland’s representatives – Liz Rhodes, Jean Elder, Elizabeth MacDonald and Judy Mowat, 28-9, to claim the title.

They also showed their colours in the preliminary round when they got past England’s Pa Walker, Jan Everett, Jennie Groves and Di Hurst, 23-14, but it was in the semi-finals when the Jersey four faced their toughest challenge, squeezing past Ireland’s representatives in Jacqueline Jones, Sarah Jane Coleman, Donna McCloy and Jennifer Dowds, winning by one solitary shot, 19-18.

Scotland won the singles, with Lorna Smith playing exceptionally well to defeat Jersey’s Lindsey Greechan in the final, 21-16.

Earlier, Smith had another tough match against England’s Amy Truran in the semi-finals, getting over the line 21-18.

England won the pairs as mother-and-daughter combination Sue Alexander and Bowls International’s Ellen Falkner took the title. The pairing won their final with ease against Scotland’s Lauren and Leanne Baille, 27-10.

Their semi-final match was much tougher, however, as they edged past Ireland’s Margaret McNevin and Noeleen Kelly, 20-18.

The senior fours is being played today.
