Darren Burnett: “It’s a special place for any bowler”

Scotland’s Darren Burnett is eager to return to the portable rink at Potters Resort this year after missing out on last year’s World Indoor Championships due to injury.

The 45-year-old police officer suffered a broken arm in the line of duty just a few weeks before the Championships were set to take place.

“Things are improving,” said Burnett, who required a metal plate in his left arm following the incident.

“There is still a bit to go to build up strength in the arm and I am still receiving physio, but hopefully things are moving in the right direction. I am continuing with strength and conditioning work to try and get as much movement and strength back in my left arm as possible.”

The 2014 World Indoor Singles Champion from Arbroath admits that he cannot wait to return to the Norfolk venue later this month.

“I am very much looking forward to returning to Potters this year,” he said.

“The best players from around the world of indoor bowls come together to test their skills in the best indoor tournament in the world.

“It is a special place for any bowler and having missed last year due to injury it will be so good to get back on that portable rink in the International arena. Having people back spectating will also provide that special atmosphere.

“I’m lucky enough to have won the singles, pairs and mixed pairs once and would love to add to that.”

“Once the nine-hour journey is complete there is nothing you can’t like about Potters,” he said about the Hopton-on-Sea location that has hosted the Championships since 1999.

“The venue is superb from food, facilities and entertainment.”

Burnett, seeded 11th in this year’s singles event, will start his campaign against Hong Kong’s Ken Chan.

In the pairs, Burnett will once again be teaming up with Stewart Anderson as they look to emulate their success of 2016. The No. 3 seeds face a tough opening round contest against Ireland’s Mark McPeak and Stuart Bennett.
