DAY 3 | Harlow and Brett come through thriller that required FIVE tie-break ends

Greg Harlow and Nick Brett were involved in one of the great tussles on the portable rink, requiring an incredible FIVE tie-break ends to defeat the newly formed pairing of Ashley Nethercliffe and Wayne Willgress.

The Nethercliffe/Willgress partnership only happened due to William Moultonโ€™s positive Covid test, however they certainly gave their all on the green.

With the scores tied at one set all and one end all in the tie-break, Brett and Harlow nominated to kill the end when match down on the third tie-break end. Brett killed the end, to force another tie-break end to be played.

It was a role reversal just a few minutes later when Nethercliffe and Willgress found themselves match down โ€“ a nomination to kill the end took place, and when Willgress managed to get the jack off the side of the rink, an unprecedented fifth end was required.

But it was the Harlow and Brett duo who secured the shot on a tight end to reach the last eight, where they will face Jason Greenslade and Les Gillett, who came from a set down to defeat Paul Maynard and James Rippey on a tie-break.

Young qualifiers Lee Calver and Connor Cinato were unable to replicate their form of the previous days with defeat to Dean Warmington and Scott Edwards. Warmington and Edwards controlled the match well, winning the first set 10-1, before seeing out the second set 10-3 to reach the last four.

Mark Dawes and Jamie Chestney continued their quest to retain the Open Pairs title with another straight sets victory, this time against Simon Skelton and Michael Stepney.

Four-time champions Paul Foster and Alex Marshall will also return to the portable rink tomorrow to face another all-Scottish pairing of Stewart Anderson and Darren Burnett, the 2016 champions.
