England’s Harry Goodwin continues to make a bold bid to make history at the World Bowls Indoor Championships in Guernsey.
The 26-year-old Swale IBC member, winner of both the Under 25 men’s singles and mixed pairs in County Antrim IBC in 2022, is hotly tipped to be a strong contender to lift both titles at the senior event currently being staged at Guernsey Indoor Bowling Association which could make him the first ever player to achieve such a feat.
Monday’s play saw him beat South Africa’s Jason Evans in the singles and with 2023 English Indoor Bowling Association women’s singles victor Rebecca McMillan chalk up success against Cindy Royet and Guillaume Hertzog from France in the mixed pairs.
But he faces a strong field of contenders also bidding for Guernsey glory – former event winner Shannon McIlroy, New Zealand, Jason Greenslade, with home advantage playing out of the host club, Ray Pearce, Australia, Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple, Malaysia, and Clive McGreal from the Isle of Man have also won both their matches in the men’s singles so far.
The day’s play also saw tie-break wins for Stanley Lai, Hong Kong, China, against Ireland’s Simon Martin and Turkiye’s Ozkan Akar who beat USA champion Loren Dion.
In the women’s event, defending champion, Scotland’s Julie Forrest was beaten by Jersey’s Lindsey Greechan, a former world Under 25 champion, while Kiwi Tayla Bruce maintains her hopes of adding the World Bowls Indoor Championships women’s singles crown to the World Bowls Champion of Champions crown she won in 2022.
England’s Rebecca McMillan, Natalie McWilliams, Scotland, Christine (Petal) Jones, Norfolk Island, Linda Ng, Canada, and Ireland’s prolific title winner and past president of the IIBC Sandra Bailie MBE, have also won both their games.
In the mixed pairs, results included IIBC president, Guernsey’s Alison Merrien MBE who is partnering Olle Backgren from Sweden returning a 16-1, 12-3 scorecard over Irit Grencel and Gabor Foti (Israel and Hungary), grandmother and grandson Christine (Petal) Jones and Jordy Jones (Norfolk Island) beating Malaysia’s Nor Farrah Ain Abdullah and Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple and Canada’s Linda Ng and Mike McNorton getting the better of Ireland’s Sandra Bailie MBE and Simon Martin (Ireland) 6-3, 5-5.
Pupils from St Mary and St Michaels Catholic Primary School took time out from their lessons to visit the stadium and watch the morning sessions with some of the players taking time out to chat to the children and pose for a photo, with one of the children proudly spotting his grandfather’s photo on the wall in the club – Nick Donaldson who won the men’s singles at the World Indoor Bowls Council’s 2006 event.
