Day three of the World Bowls Indoor Championships in Guernsey produced its biggest shock of the event so far.
It came in the mixed pairs when Namibia husband and wife, Yvonne and Carel Aron Olivier, beat Australia big guns Samanatha Atkinson and Ray Pearse.
Drawing the first set 5-5, the Oliviers, who play at Namib Park Bowls Club, went on to take the second 9-6.
“It’s unbelievable,” said Carel Aron (known as Poena) afterwards.
“We were thrashed yesterday by Wales but had a talk last night and decided to take this match bowl by bowl. We came out with a fresh approach and didn’t play any risky shots because they didn’t work in our previous match.”
“This is our biggest ever win,” continued Poena who was a quarter-finalist in the mixed pairs 12 months ago.
“We don’t have an indoor club near us, so we have had to adapt to playing on carpet quickly.”
In other mixed pairs matches, New Zealand’s Tayla Bruce and Shannon McIlroy chalked up their third win out of three matches with success against England’s Rebecca McMillan and Harry Goodwin, while also unbeaten are Canada’s Linda Ng and Mike McNorton and Julie Forrest and Michael Stepney, of Scotland.
Pian Lai and Johnny Ng from Macao, China, and Esme Haley and Jason Evans, of South Africa, who are still awaiting their delayed luggage and using borrowed bowls also recorded wins, as did Wales’ Sara Nicholls and Kristian Crocker and Singapore’s Lee Beng Hua and Chiu Pok Man.
In the men’s singles, Ozkan Akar from Turkiye chalked up the day’s biggest win with a 5-5, 22-0 triumph at the hands of Jamaica’s Robert Simpson, while there was more success for Clive McGreal from the Isle of Man who won his third match.
Other winners included Ireland’s Simon Martin, Derek Boswell from Jersey and Malaysia’s Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple.
The women’s singles saw Malta’s Connie Rixon return a straight sets win against Jersey’s Lindsey Greechan who 24 hours earlier has taken the scalp of defending champion Julie Forrest. Guernsey’s Rose Ogier continues to take advantage of the home carpet posting her third win. It’s also three out of three also for Kiwi Tayla Bruce, England’s Rebecca McMillan, Natalie McWilliams, Scotland, and Linda Ng, Canada, while victory for Wales’ Sara Nicholls keeps her in the hunt for the silverware too.
The fourth of five days of sectional play continues tomorrow (Wednesday) at 8.30 am UK time.
