Malaysia and Scotland take first ever Classic Pairs titles

Malaysia and Scotland made history on Sunday when they won their first ever pairs title in men and women respectively at the Hong Kong International Bowls Classic at the Kowloon Bowling Green Club.

In the men’s pairs final, Malaysian Muhammad Hizlee Abdul Rais and Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple defeated Sheldon Bagrie-Howley and Craig Tinker in straight set 8:4, 11:7. This is the first ever title the Malaysian men collected from the annual tournament.

In the women’s competition, Dee Hoggan and Rachel Sinclair from Scotland won six shots on the last end of the first set to take the set 9:7, and went on to tie the second set 9:9 to defeat Nicole Rogers and Harriet Stevens from England.  Over the years, the Scottish team has won the singles title twice, but never has any success in the pairs.

Details and results of the tournament are available from the Lawn Bowls Association of Hong Kong, China homepage at www.hklba.org.

First organised in 1981, the Hong Kong International Bowls Classic is recognised as one of the best outdoor bowls tournaments in the world.  Over the years, famous bowlers from all leading bowling countries have participated in the event.  Hong Kong has won the Pairs title on five occasions and the Hong Kong Team won it in 2007.  In the Singles, Hong Kong players George Souza Jnr, Noel Kennedy and Jordi Lo won their titles in 1984, 1994 and 2015 respectively. For women, Hong Kong Youth Team Amy Choi and Vivian won Pairs and Local Player Dorothy Yu and Vivian Yip won Singles in 2015 and 2017 respectively.
