A big Guernsey welcome awaits for world class bowls event

International Indoor Bowls Council president, acclaimed bowler Alison Merrien MBE (pictured), says sheโ€™s โ€˜proud and privileged to be president of the IIBC who with World Bowls will be staging one of the prestigious events on the world bowls calendar at her home club.

The 2024 World Bowls Indoor Championship is being staged at Guernsey Indoor Bowling Association from April 21-27.

โ€œI am honoured to be able to say that Guernsey is my home,โ€ said Merrien.

โ€œIt has been 34 years since the World Indoor Championships were held in Guernsey and we are delighted to have 30 countries involved with this yearโ€™s competition.

โ€œOur thanks go to the Guernsey Indoor Bowling Association (GIBA) for hosting this event. We know how much work the GIBA Council, members and volunteers have put in behind the scenes to ensure these championships come to fruition and are confident of a truly exciting week of competition.

โ€œPersonally, I am looking forward to meeting up with old friends and making new ones.

โ€œI wish all competitors good bowling and hope you enjoy your week in Guernsey for this wonderful event.โ€

GIBA LBG president Stephen Desperques said: โ€œWhat an honour it is for the GIBA LBG to have been selected to host this prestigious event with 30 countries from all over the world coming to Guernsey to participate.

โ€œThis would not have been possible without the hard work over many months of the organizing committee, led by council members Josh and Catherine Bonsall, Ian Merrien along with Ali Merrien, who have all dedicated many hours to get everything ready.

โ€œThen we must also thank all the sponsors for their support.

โ€œNot forgetting all the volunteers that over the week of the championship will be marking the games and those helping out in many other roles, also thanks to the umpires who have travelled over from the UK.

โ€œWe are all very much looking forward to giving all the competitors and officials a big welcome to our lovely Island of Guernsey.โ€

World Bowls CEO, Neil Dalrymple, added: โ€œWorld Bowls, International Indoor Bowls Council and Guernsey Indoor Bowling Association have worked very well in partnership to deliver the 2024 event and we are looking forward to what will be a very competitive competition featuring many world class bowlers together with some players who are new to the world stage.โ€
