Exciting Opportunity exists at the Bowls Development Alliance (BDA)

to appoint two non-executive Directors to join the Board

The Bowls Development Alliance is seeking two non-executive Directors, to join the present BDA Board of Directors to drive the development of the Bowls Development Alliance through the next four year funding cycle.

The Bowls Development Alliance is an umbrella body for Bowls England (flat outdoor green bowls) and the English Indoor Bowling Association Ltd (flat indoor green bowls)

Both partners are committed to the vision to GROW and SUSTAIN the sport of bowls across England.

The BDA have submitted a bid to Sport England for a further 4 years funding and are awaiting the decision which is expected in December 2012.

Experience & Skills Required

The successful candidates will be able to make a significant contribution to the Board of the BDA.

We are seeking individuals who can bring experience from one or more of the following backgrounds:

  • Charity (fund raising & sponsorship)
  • Health
  • Research/Data/Statistics
  • Media
  • Older people
  • County Sport Partnership/Local Authority
  • Education

Candidates should possess the following skills:

  • Objective judgement & decision making skills with the ability to influence effectively
  • Excellent inter-personal skills with the ability to communicate effectively
  • Skilled in building and maintaining strong partnerships
  • Ability to manage change

Note

The applicant must not be:

  • a full time paid employee of Bowls England or EIBA Ltd
  • a professional advisor to Bowls England or EIBA Ltd
  • a supplier of services or equipment to Bowls England or EIBA Ltd
  • have a political or administrative role in bowls.

Position of non-executive Director – Bowls Development Alliance

Background

The Bowls Development Alliance is the umbrella organisation for Bowls England (flat green outdoor bowls) and the English Indoor Bowling Association (flat green indoor).Both National Governing Bodies are 100% committed to working together to both GROW and SUSTAIN participation in the sport of bowls

The focus of the alliance is on increasing participation of those who are 65+ thus making bowls one of the few sports that can be played both for fun and competitively well into later life.

The present 4 year Sport England funding cycle is coming to an end and the Bowls Development Alliance are awaiting confirmation of a further 4 years that will take the sport up to March 2017

Overview of the Role

As a Board member, attend bi-monthly meetings and engage in the workings of the Board in relation to the operations, development of the business of the organisation and its strategy, in accordance with its purpose as set out in its governing document and all legal and regulatory requirements.

Main Responsibilities:

  • To oversee the development of the vision, strategy and policies of the Bowls Development Alliance.
  • Ensure the financial stability of the BDA and the most appropriate use of funds.
  • Ensure that the Alliance operates in accordance with the decisions of the Board and the Memorandum and Articles
  • Provide advice on areas of expertise and knowledge.
  • Ensure that appropriate steps are taken to ensure the Alliance is perceived by the sport ,the media and the public in general as being well managed, effective and successful
  • Represent and champion the Bowls Development Alliance at the highest level in terms of advocacy and networking with relevant partners and stakeholders especially Bowls England, EIBA Ltd, Sport England and Sports Coach UK.

Role

  • Provide relevant experience and knowledge in order to develop the work of the BDA.
  • Liaise with, and provide support to the BDA Manager in areas of expertise.
  • Work with the BDA Manager to promote the delivery of the vision, strategy and policies.
  • Monitor and hold to account the BDA team to ensure targets are met.
  • When necessary, take a role in the recruiting the BDA Manager and any other members of the BDA team
