BOWLING MINNOWS SWITZERLAND ‘A’ KNOCK OUT MIGHTY ENGLAND ‘B’ IN CYPRUS

It was a day of surprises at the host venue of Constantinou Athena Beach Hotel on the beautiful shores the Mediterranean in Paphos, Cyprus as the Atlantic Seniors Championship turned its attention of the Mixed Fours event, with several of the fancied nations bowing out of contention in the opening stages of the event. Played on a knock-out basis, over a three-day period, it was a delighted Switzerland Team ‘A’ of Sol Robertson, Hazel Bagshaw, Peter Lauper and Markus Burgin who took the scalps of England ‘B’ Cheryl Hanslip, Glenys Bolt, Chris Hanslip and Men’s Fours gold medallist Alan Theobald 14-11, with skip Burgin drawing the match winner with his first delivery. South Africa also saw their hopes collapse, with Kenny Kyriacou’s Team ‘B’ narrowly missing out to Phil Dunn’s USA Team A 11-10 while Sue Tarr’s B Team faced a similar defeat from Richard Jayne’s Wales. Team USA D also tasted success, beating Jersey C 17-8, Dave Smith’s Norfolk Is B Team progressed against Wales B 15-10, Also bowing out throughout the day were Czech Republic who dropped four shots on the last end to go miss out 16-11 to Cyprus C, England C lost to Cyprus B, England D were beaten by Guernsey and USA B ended the hopes of Scotland B.
