Bowls at the Special Olympics GB next month

Indoor Bowls will be part of the Special Olympics GB 40th Anniversary games which takes place in Stirling fromAugust 10-12.

The SOGB Indoor bowls organising team recently made the trip up to Stirling to visit the Indoor Bowls venue and its surrounds.

โ€œThe facility is perfect for our requirements and we are looking forward to the athletes arriving and enjoying the games,โ€ said Competition manager Janice Gower, she added, โ€œPeople are more than welcome to come down and support and watch, and there will be catering on at the club for spectators.โ€ย  The competition runs throughout the Friday, Saturday and Sunday with medal ceremonies on the Saturday and Sunday.

โ€œWe are very pleased and proud to be the host venue for this event. Itโ€™s not only great for our club but also for Sterling itself. We are looking forward to being involved and supporting the athletes and coaches,โ€ said Brian McLaughlin one of the clubs directors who was on hand to show the team around the venue and its fantastic facilities.

Special Olympics GBโ€™s Anniversary Games will celebrate 40 years of competition and training for athletes with intellectual (learning) disabilities in England, Scotland and Wales.

The event will also pay tribute to 50 years of Special Olympics โ€“ founded in 1968 in the USA by Eunice Kennedy Shriver โ€“ sister of President John F Kennedy.

The SOGB 40th Anniversary Games will be hosted by Special Olympics Scotland in Stirling and is being supported by EventScotland, part of VisitScotlandโ€™s Events Directorate.

The Games are expected to welcome over 1,400 Special Olympics athletes with intellectual (learning) disabilities, plus officials and also attract over 4,000 spectators from the UK and also across the World.

Competitors range across age groups, competing in ten sports, including boccia, badminton, indoor bowls, cycling, football, golf, table tennis, swimming, MATP and athletics.

The events will take place at the University of Stirling, whilst golf and indoor bowls will be held at Callander Golf Club and Stirling Indoor Bowling Club respectively.

The games will include an Olympic style opening ceremony which we will celebrate the culture of Special Olympics GB and also the Games host country of Scotland, with a superb line up of entertainment.

Monday 13th August – Special Olympics athletes, coaches and teams depart
