Ladies World Under 25 singles quarter-finals recap


Norfolk Islands – Shae Wilson V Scotland – Sophie McGrouther (pictured)
Scotland’s Sophie McGrouther who qualified for this morning’s Singles quarter finals with wins over England’s Rebecca Moorbey and Rebecca Rixon from Malta to finish second in her group, raced into an impressive 7-0 lead over Shae Wilson from the Norfolk Islands. Shae who progressed to the Quarter finals as group winner with straight sets wins over Scotland’s Aimee Harris and Emily Kernick from England. Sophie kept pressure on to only lose one end and take the first set 11-2.

Shots were traded in the first four ends of the second set, with the all square at 4-4, with a single to Shae on the fifth end. It was Sophie who was hitting with her last bowl in the next two ends with absolute precision to get over line 6-5 and move into the semi-finals.

Ireland – Shauna O’Neill V Wales – Estee Parry
Wales’s Estee Parry, qualifying from group C after wins over Emma Murphy from South Africa and Hungary’s Sarolta Schrank, started strongly in the first set against Shauna O’Neill from Ireland who qualified top in her group undefeated. With Estee scoring singles on the last three ends of the first set she took it 7-3.

Second set, singles were traded over the first four ends, Shauna though score a three on the fifth and hung on over the next two ends taking the second set 5-4 to force the dreaded one end tie break. With the momentum, Shauna got the vital shot needed to progress to the semi-finals.

Guernsey Catherine Bonsall V Canada Jordan Kos
Jordan Kos from Canada started off strongly in her quarter final against Guernsey’s Catherine Bonsall. Jordan qualified through a tight group A with wins over Scotland’s Erin Bedwell and Lauren Gowan from Wales, led 4-0 after 3 ends and then scored singles over the last three to take the first set 7-3

After losing the first end of the second set, Catherine who qualified for the quarter final unbeaten settled down and produced some fantastic bowls to score on the next five ends to take the set 7-1.

Another one end tie break would decide the semi-final spot, it was Guernsey’s Catherine Bonsall who held her nerve to score the shot required to secure her place in the semi-final.

Australia Jessie Cottell V Scotland Aimee Harris
The match between Scotland’s Aimee Harris and Australia’s Jessie Cottell produced really tight heads in their opening set, tied at 4-4 going into the last end, Jessie with her third bowl slid though the smallest of gaps to give Aimee who progress to the quarter final with wins over England’s Emily Kernick and Gloria Ha from Hong Kong, the first set.

Jessie who qualified through her group unbeaten, showed some real class to win the first five ends of the second set to give her a 7-0 lead, although Aimee scored on the next end, Jessie took the match to the third tie break of the mornings Quarter final.

The first few bowls were a little scrappy, but it was Aimee who drew the decisive shot just behind the jack to take the tie break and the match and book her place in the semi-final.

This afternoon’s Ladies World Under 25 semi-finals will see Ireland’s Shauna O’Neill face Guernsey’s Catherine Bonsall and in the other semi-final will see an all-Scotland clash with Aimee Harris taking on Sophie McGrouther.
