Gents Under 25 World Championship quarter-finals recap

Wales – Ryan Davies v Ireland – Ryan McElroy (pictured)

After losing a two on the opening end of the first set, Wales’s Ryan Davies scored a three and a two on the next consecutive ends to race into a 7-2 lead against Ireland’s Ryan McElroy. It was enough to get the Welsh hope Ryan over the line 9-2 taking the first set.

They do talk about a game of two halves and this match up turned out just to be that. Ireland’s Ryan scored a four on the first end of the second set and didn’t look back, not dropping a single shot to force a tie break and win the second set 10-0

As often happens in the one end shoot out, first in usually wins the match and that was the case, as Ryan Davies from Wales secured the shot required and progresses to this afternoons Semi-final.

Australia – Nathan Black v Namibia – John-Pierre Fouche

Australia’s Nathan Black after emerging undefeated from the group stages faced Namibia’s John- Pierre Fouche in what can only be said as thrilling quarter-final.

The first set was all square at 3-3 after three ends, John-Pierre then scored a four only to lose a four on the very next end, but two singles on the next two ends saw John-Pierre take the first set 9-7.

Set two was more of the same in terms of scoring, 5-5 after five ends. John-Pierre picked up a two on end six, Nathan now required three to take the match to a tie break. After the perfect conversion shot Ryan gave himself a chance to draw for three with his last bowl and he did just that.

Ryan who was a bowl from going out of this years Championships got in first and John-Pierre just didn’t have the answer, which saw Australia’s Nathan Black progress to this afternoon’s semi-finals.

England – Harry Goodwin v Malaysia Muhammad Idham Amin Bin Ramlan

Defending Champion Harry Goodwin qualified for the quarter-finals progressing from his group with three wins from three, he faced Muhammad Idham Amin Bin Ramlan from Malaysia who made it through with wins over Jordy Jones from Norfolk Islands and Mate Dobos from Hungary.

It was Harry who looked to be in control of the first set taking a 5-2 lead after three ends, but Muhammmad stormed back on the next four ends not dropping a shot to take the first set 9-5.

The second set saw shots traded and after five ends the score was tied at three all. The next end Muhammad played the perfect last two bowls scoring a two and piling pressure on Harry to score a three to keep the match and his title defensive alive. Lying one with the last bowl, Harry narrowly missed the jack in his attempt to trail for three, Muhammad moves on to this afternoon’s semi-final in what can only be described as a deserved victory.

Scotland – Bradly Buchan v Macau – Myles Ng

After three impressive wins in his group, home favourite Scotland’s Bradley Buchan took on Macau’s Myles Ng, Myles had wins over Josh Bonsall from Guernsey and Erik Galipeau from Canada to make the quarter-finals.

Myles took an early lead in the first set, taking a three on the third end, but Bradley scored on the next three ends winning the first set 9-4.

Bradley was relentless in the second set and made it really hard for Myles to get back into the match, only dropping tow ends, Bradley took the second set 7-3 and books his place in this afternoons’ semi-final.

The Gents World Under 25 semi-finals line up: Ryan Davies (Wales) takes on Australia’s Nathan Black and Scotland’s Bradley Buchan faces Muhammad Idham Amin Bin Ramlan from Malaysia.
