Sue’s super season: Worcestershire star qualifies in EIGHT events

Sue Davies will have multiple chances of becoming a national champion before the month is out, after qualifying for Leamington in no fewer than eight events.

We don’t believe that anyone has previously been so prolific – but there’s more! To reach the national finals you have generally to make it to your county final, but Sue has done better than that. The Broadway star actually won her county title in seven of those events.

She is now the 2018 WWBA champion in two-wood and four-wood singles, pairs, triples and fours, as well as senior (over 55) singles and fours. The only event she did not convert into a county title is the Top Club – which is not a county competition!

Sue will launch her marathon bid on Tuesday, August 7, when she steps on to the Victoria Park green at 9.30am to take on a Derbyshire quartette in the first round of the fours.

Members of the remarkable Broadway club, which boasts only 17 women bowlers, are naturally proud of what Sue has achieved – but she is at pains to point out that there are others at the club who deserve even higher praise, and paid a special tribute to former Somerset star Amy Walters, who skipped in the pairs, triples and fours.

Amy, who works for Bowls England at Leamington, and is expecting a baby in October, is married to England international Andy Walters, who, incidentally, is Sue’s nephew. The 29-year-old Amy and Andy, who is 31, have won the national mixed pairs title for the past two years.
