Equality Policy – Bowls England

Bowls England have issued a statement explaining their concern over a lack of provision made for working women and students by number of county associations. I (Patrick Hulbert) feel that the behaviour exhibited by certain county associations is despicable and feel that this discriminatory attitude is an abhorrence in our sport. I know that in my county, women are allowed to play at a time suitable to someone working but that these people are treated like second class citizens by many players, expecting that an afternoon, competitive match is a given right. I shall write a blog about this in due course. SORT IT OUT.

Statement from the Board of Bowls England

At its meeting on 21st and 22nd September 2011, the Board of Bowls England approved the Equality Policy and Action Plan.

At this same meeting the Board was in receipt of correspondence indicating that several county associations are still not making adequate provision for working women and students, for example by offering them the opportunity to play County Championship matches in the evening or weekend.

The Board of Bowls England wishes to stress that it is very concerned at the lack of flexibility being demonstrated by some county associations, which it is not only having a detrimental effect on the participation of younger women in our sport but may fall foul of the Equality Act 2010 if challenged in a court of law.

The Board of Bowls England therefore wishes to take this opportunity to urge all county associations โ€“ whether unified or not โ€“ to make some attempt to re-dress the balance ahead of the 2012 season as it is our stated aim that: โ€˜Bowls England will ensure that everyone who wishes has an equal opportunity to participate in the sport of bowls at all levels and in all rolesโ€™.
