DAY 2 | Calver and Cinato upset Royal and Paxton in Open Pairs

Young qualifiers Lee Calver and Connor Cinato caused an upset on the second day of the World Indoor Championships from Potters Resort, defeating Mark Royal and Robert Paxton in straight sets.

Both players looked at home on the portable rink, narrowly winning the first set with a 7-6 scoreline, before a convincing 9-5 victory in the second set sealed their passage to the quarter-finals.

Mark Dawes and Jamie Chestney started their quest to retain the Open Pairs title with a strong 11-2, 11-2 victory over debutants Mark Burdett and Ben Harris.

Should Dawes and Chestney defend their trophy picked up 12 months ago, they would be the first pair to achieve such a feat since Paul Foster and Alex Marshall in 2013.

Foster and Marshall themselves secured a quarter-final berth today with victory against a spirited performance from Hong Kongโ€™s Lyndon Sham and Ken Chan.

Stewart Anderson and Darren Burnett, the 2016 champions, also cemented their place in the last eight, however they had to work hard to do so.

The Scottish duo lost the opening set to Irelandโ€™s Mark McPeak and Stuart Bennett, before winning the second set 10-5, followed by 2-0 on the tie-break.
